I hope you all had an enjoyable Coronation Weekend. Unfortunately no one took a photo to compare our 2023 celebrations on the Green with the above 1953 image. We didnt have a marquee on the Green but we had plenty of family picnics and the Beacon was again lit. At the time of writing SLHG still has to hold our AGM but are looking forward to our June talk on aspects of Stowmarket Church. Prior to the building of Holy Trinity in the 1840’s this church was shared by worshipers from Stowmarket and Stowupland.

This has a brief review of Elspeth Rushbrook’s talk on her research into a lady who survived the sinking of the Titanic and a look at Watch Bench Lane. This was a lane which has been eradicated from the road system of modern Stowupland but evidence is slowly coming to light that it did exist for several centuries.
