Kebyll

Through the centuries the Kebyll family have played a very significant role in Stowupland’s history. Perhaps not surprisingly the name is often spelt differently and often family ties are unknown  e.g.Keeble, Keble or Kebill.

Our thanks to Ena Carter for keeping notes made by her contemporaries and her thoughts on family links e.g.she pondered how the Kebyll and Dego family were linked to Elm Farm.

1456 Richard Kebyll of Thorney – Our thanks to Ena Carter for keeping notes made by her contemporaries, in this case relating to the 1456 kebyll will which they retrieved from Norwich Record Office.

Ena wondered whether in the 1460s land later known as Elm Farm was bought by the Kebyll family or of it was the result of a marriage settlement.

12th Feb, 1487, will of John Kebyll of Stowmarket, his wish to be buried in the churchyard of St Peter & St Paul. A bequeath to this wife katherine of a shop formerly of John Fenkeles and Geoffrey Goddards, to his son Robert property in Saxton an Thorney and his son Richard property in Earl Stonham.

14th April, 1494 -will of John Kebyll of Sapton (ie Saxton), mention of Fakemannys, Padnall and Howgate.

Ena added that around 1495, a Richard Keble held a messuage, and 1 acre of part of ‘Wales’ in Stowupland – a rental of 4s to Prior of (H)Ingham.

1511 Robert Kebyll the elder of Saxston Hamlet in the towne of Stowmarket bequeathed to his son Richard his tenement called Fenkellys & Hervyses with the lands belonging to them in Saxston with my closes called Doolys & Thorneycroft, a parcel of land in Badgrym in Stonham with a messuage in Cutts….to my son Robert my close called Bryssetts & a parcel of land called pagys.

September 1537 will of Henry Kebyll of Saxton Hamlet, widower. Names 2 sisters and brothers but also ‘John Umfrey, my brother’. Ena suggested that Henry’s mother Joan had remarried into the Umfrey family. Henry’s father-in-law John King is an exor.
