A press report on John Scarfe tells us that in the 1970’s The Stowupland Corinthians were described as the forerunners to Stowmarket F.C.

He was reported as saying that in the years following the war local football attracted ‘gates of 2000’ but by the 70s they were lucky to get 100  ‘People do not come now because they are able to afford to get out and about more. With inflation it makes our task of surviving even more difficult‘. He was concerned that rising costs would make it difficult for clubs outside the ‘four league divisions’ to survive which ‘will be terrible as far as football is concerned’.

John Scarfe was born in Mendelsham but lived in Stowupland and worked for 23 years for I.C.I. He was a founder member of the Corinthians in Stowupland but after WW2 they played at the Cricket meadow in Stowmarket.
