Manor of Cardens, in Stow

‘All we gather of this manor is that it belonged to John Tyrell who died 7th Sept 1538, and that it passed to his son and heir, John Tyrell’ {ECA from Coppinger Suffolk Manors Vol V1, p237}

“Cardens” – contraction of “the Cardinal’s” – piece of ground near Regent street which once belonged to Wolsey (now remembered by Cardinal Street.

A man living in 1844 in Stowupland named Wolsey claimed to be a descendant of Wolsey’s uncle (Wolsey died in 1530) {ECA, Hollinsworth, p 106}
