Doles Farm

This is still a research project. Its nearest neighbour is Star Orchard/House, Saxham Street, Stowupland.

The farm known today as Doles Farm is down a short footpath off  Debenham Lane. However it has not always been called Doles and it is possible other farms in the area were called Doles.

Former names may have been Owls, Witneshamdoles or Sidons.

 

 From the 1840 tithes (45a tm], owner Eliz Cooper,  occ. William Sedon or  Brame, James (farmer, 25) & Mary (20) & Mary Brame (servant, 15). Known as Doles, along a lane from Debenham or Dedham Lane.

1892 sale of 25 a of Accommodation Farm know as Dole’s of Sidon’s farm, 25a 3r 35p. with dwelling house and farm buildings.

Also 2 enclosures of freehold land of 8a 2r 35p with a double tenement, Outhoses and large garden in the occupation of executors of George Stedman. at £48 10s per annum.

In 1913 a vagrant named Arthur Brundish was arrested and charged with ‘wandering abroad and sleeping in a straw stack’ at Stowupland. Giving evidence PC Amos Lloyd described going Doles farm, which was occupied by Mr S. Cobbold’ where he found Mr Brundish sleeping rough .

1913 arrest of a vagrant
