Cyril Ernest Girling
1920 – 1944
Cyril had been a farm labourer working with poultry before he enlisted in the RAF. In March 1944 the plane he was in was shot down near Koblenz and he is bureid at Rheinberg Cemetery with the other 6 members of the crew.
The plane had taken off from Melbourne, Yorkshire and was one of 705 aircraft. The official report said only 9 aircraft were lost, 48 industrial buildings were seriously damaged, around 1750 houses destroyed and 550 people killed on the ground.
The epitaph on his grave reads THOUGH THE YEARS MAY PASS AWAY MEMORIES OF YOU ALWAYS STAY R.I.P.
