Godbold

members of the Godbold family have several links to Stowupland.

From the 1794 will of Issac Bayly:

  • My workman or servant Samuel Godbold of Stowupland yeoman to occupy cottage in Stowupland.
  • All that messuage, farmlands, tenements and premises in Combs in the occupation of myself to Jonathan Godbold my servent.
  • £10.00 to Deborah Godbold wife of James Quinton
  • £100 to Jonathan Godbold, in a codicil this was annulled

Herbert Godbold was a son of James Godbold, both were Veterinary surgeons in Stowmarket. Herbert’s surgery was in Bury Street, whilst his father’s was at 33-35 Stowupland Street. 1891 census lists Herbert age 40 as a licensed veterinary surgeon, born Stowmarket living with his wife Kate and 6 children. Frank born 1888 trained as a vet but failed his final exams but ‘he decided to put his knowledeg of animal anatomy to good use and became a butcher’. {Serving You Through the Years, Sue Cowling and Steve Williams: 1998}
