From the 1911 census we know a police constable John Hopes (b.1869) was living in Stonham Road, Stowupland. This was most likely in one of the tenements of Barns Cottages. He had been born in Raydon, Suffolk. His wife was Jessie (b. 1868) who had been born in Stowmarket.

They had 3 children living with them: Margery (b. 1897 in Mellis), Stanley Jack ( b. 1899 in Mellis) and Cyril Frank (b. 1901 in Mellis). Both boys were in the pre-WW1 school photo.
