Mount Pleasant
Mount Pleasant’s history is linked to Howgate Farm and Hoowood.
Photo from Ena Carter Archives with her note that ‘Joanna, widow of Robert Mulliner of Wetheringsett, moved with her four children, Joanna, Will, Elizabeth and Mary, to Stowupland in 1699, to a house and farm of about 15 acres, now known as Mount Pleasant.’
To read Ena’s list of other Mount Pleasant owners and occupiers 1635 to 1729.
In the 18th and 19th century the land was owned by the curacy of Hunston, so in the 19th century it is owned by Rev William Steggall.
Ena Carter must have had access to the deeds of the house and had them copied as they are available on microfilm at The Hold (Microfilm JC1/26/1). She also made them available to Frank Grace who produced an article on two parts based on these documents for the Suffolk Local History Council’s “Suffolk Review” entitled “Administration of a Late 17th Century Will”.
Mount Pleasant is mentioned in 1808 in the diary of John Green Crosse (surgeon)
1786 Sale of House and Farm goods at Mount Pleasant, Wm Pettit.
