Pendle and Appleton Cottages

Pendle Cottage but the date is unknown

Although the name is rarely used today these cottages are part of the small group of properties that were formerly referred to as Church Walk Hamlet.

Since the 1960’s this house has been known as Pendle Cottage, it is unknow what it was previously called {Photo from SLHG archives/ECA}.

Freeman’s diaries (April 18,1826) tell us that .’pd Kerry for thatching Meeting House in part 6s 0d, Mr Prentice pd the rest’. Mr Wm Prentice paid £4 rent for cottage which was used as a meeting place or  chapel, Sunday school and grocers shop. The Mr Prentice named is not the William Prentice who was the head mater of Stowupland’s first purpose built school.

Charles Freeman further noted: Feb 15th 1823 ‘Cash of Mr Fison for 1 years rent for school room due last Michelmas. £4:00 received’, Jan 30 1824 ‘Cash of Mr Wm Prentice for rent of school room for one year due Michelmas (1823) £4.00’, April 18th 1826 in addition to comment re thatching ‘£4.00 rent for cottage’  and 1828 ‘of Mr Wm Prentice £4.00 rent for school room’

1839 Tithe details gives the occupier of tm 310 as Robinson etc..

1964 – Kenyon and Haywood were occupiers and first known record of the property being  called Pendle Cottage. Haywards lived in Appleton Cottage, which is the part of the buidling furthest from the road.
