Spencer's

flyerFollowing the death of Alec Disney, Jim and Pauline Spencer took over the Stores. They had been trading as butchers from F.C.Godbold & sons in Ipswich Street, Stowmarket.

In 1963 they closed this shop to focus on the Stowupland shop. The Stowupland shop was a shop of 2 halves,: one run by Jim Spencer was a butchers, the other half run by Pauline was a greengrocers.

The Spencer’s demolished the old Disney’s, but first had a garage built to the rear so they could continue trading. Apparently all the old building material was recycled:

  • The roof slates were removed by a builder who used them for doing repairs
  • Yhe clay lump was returned to a field owned by Mr Allard
  • The wood was deposited on the Green for people to take to use as firewood
  • Old bricks were reused by the builders as hard-core.

Read Pauline Spencer’s personl memories as printed in Telstar Spencers 1963 to 1987

Jim Spencer was a stalwart of Stowupland Cricket Club.

Village myth or remembered fact

Local people remember Spencer’s as a shop of 2 halves- one end organised by Pauline sold fruit and vegetables whilst Jim’s end was the butchers’.
