Village Bonfires
Following a post on ‘ facebook’ several local people remembered collecting garden rubbish to construct communal bonfires in various locations.
Before the row of shops were built at the corner of Broomspath and Devon Road a bonfire was built there.
One person had a painful memory of building a bonfire on the Green near the garage, and inadvertently stabbing his sisters foot when he put his Dad’s fork in the ground
Another site was on land in Reeds Way prior to houses being built there.
Disney’s ‘sold bundles of fireworks, mainly ‘bamgers’ for 1d or 2d from a large bin, the bottom of which was thick with loose gunpowder!’
This Wilden fireworks advert comes from 1969. Wildens was a Stowmarket shop.
