Barnardo's or Boarders

Stella and Evelyn

In his unpublished manuscript ‘As I Remember It’ the Rev Leslie Brame shared his memories of 2 thirteen year old girls who came to live in Church Walk Hamlet. He does not give a date but as he was still living at home it must have been the 1930s. Old Rose (Rose Nunn) lived next door to the Brame’s. She had a sister, Amy, who lived in London as did Rose’s friiend Mrs Harrison.

He also recalled 2 younger girls who were his class mates in Standards 1 at the Elementary school (so maybe 1921 or 2), he recalled their names as Selina Stanley and Evelyn Snashall. ‘He described them as not being born to the parents who looked after them; they came from Dr Barnardo’s Homes.’

From the 1921 census, Rose had also taken in two 10 year old girls from Brighton, Nora and Ruth Millerick. Also living in her home was 18 year old Constance Baker from Hull, who was described as a general domestic servant, but in the 1911 census she is named as an 8 year old boarder.
