Bridges, canseys or carnsers

Since carnsers were wooden pathways across boggy ground whilst bridges provided a path across water ways I have decided to combine them her. Footpaths will be restricted to pathways over drier areas (though possibly muddy at times)

1673, April 1st: 5s pd to Edw Baker for 2 Rayles at the Crosse

1694. pd to Mark Green for ditching the cansey to Thorney Green. 1s

to Robt Page for mending the Bridge against Goodman Harrolds 8d.

To Fran (?) Silvester for setting a post and Rayle in the cansey 3d

pd for carpenters work & stuff and draining the Towne Meadow.

1695. pd to John Blome for mending the Rayle Cansey 2 s 8d

pd to Robt Green for making a convenient passage for hoese & man at the Upland Bridge & for expenses. 11s 6d.

for carrieing three loads of converted timber from the Town Lands to Chinerys the Rayle Cansey & John Blomes for repairing the sadi cansy & other repairs. 15s

pd to Mr Jacob for a trunke laid in the Rayle & for work by his servants.  6s

To Robert Rushbrooke for helping to fetch the stuff & timber out of the meadows belonging to the Upland Bridge. 9d

pd to Mr John Boby for carieing down stuff & timber from John Blomesto the Rayke Cansey. 2s 4d

pd to Fran(?) Silvester as appears by his bill for sawing & converting of timber for repairs of the Towne bridge & Canseys £1 12s.

for taking the timber at James Harrold’s meadows which belong to the Upland Bridge (etc etc Chinery’s Bridge, Pitmans Bridge) 8s.

Unfortunately it is not clear which Town Land is being referred to, presumably Upland Bridge is acoss the Gipping near the Pickerel and is Pittmans Bridge near Stowupland’s primary school close to Pitman’s meadow?

  • laid out to the masons where they built the bridge at several times 6s
  • pd to the Widd. Syer for damages in turning the water through her yeard when the bridge was built. 7s 6d

1703, March.

  • 8s Pd to Mark Greane for mending the Cansey. 5s pd to John Moyes for mending the Cansey. 5s pd to Mark Greans for the Cansey
  • March 2, presumably 1704. pd £2 0s 6d  to John Scotmar & Frances Silveston for carpenders worke done one the Canseys as appeare by there bill.

 1705, April 10th.

  • Pd 6d to Mark Green for cleaning the church cansey.
  • laid out 3s for two loads of stone & carriage of them to make a cansey over the road to the green.
  • Laid out 6d to Robt Rushbrooke for cleaningg the church cansey.
  • Laid out to Robt Page for mending the Rayle Cansey .
  • Paid £1 6s 5d to John Blome for worke & stuffe done & use at the Rayed Cansey & other canses as appear by his bill.
  • Laid out 6s 10d for Barrs for the Canseys.
  • 3s pad to Sam King for ditching the Canseys.
  • 3s 6d pd to John Blome for a load of stone & for carriage of them & laying them in the Cansey.
  • 6s 8d pd to James Clarke for ditching the cansey.
  • 6d pd to Goodman Brett for drawing two trunks to the cansey.
