During WWII women were called on to work in areas traditionally reserved for men such as agriculture - here in Stowupland the women stayed at a hostel on Columbine Hall farm where they were trained. Stowmarket's church (which once was shared with Stowupland) has had at least 4 spires, some having to be taken down because of disrepair and one being blown down in the early 18th century. The church's bells which are currently away for maintenance have on equally interesting story to tell.
