Land Army Girls in Stowupland

In WW2 there was a training hostel based on Columbine Hall land. When the present owners had the moat drained they found piles of old (empty) marmite bottles. it was assumed these were a relic of the Land Army Girls  (photos in Stowupland Archives).

Ena Carter’s daughter remembered that her parents had 2 Land Army Girls working at for them at Gipping Farm.

– One lady Peggy King lived-in at Gipping Farm

– Another lady, Annie Hughes, came from Bradford and she stayed in the village.

…………………………..

Wanda Thomas, one of our wartime visitors from Ilford remembered seeing Land Army Girls walking cows down from The Potter’s Farm (Columbine Hall) to the Green. She was not sure if they were cows or bulls, just that they were big. This photo is not from her collection of a land girl but it sets the scene.
