Pre 20th century Beer-houses, brewers and retailers.

Before the 1930’s, Stowupland’s boundary was the River Gipping so many of the pre-20th century business premises were in what is now Stowmarket. However for completeness any in the local area will be listed here.

Miscellaneous beerhouses or brewers

  • James Earthy Godbold had a beerhouse (Porter’s Lodge) in Stowupland Street and was a veterinary surgeon (Whites 1855)
  • In 1868 J. Baker was declared as a Stowupland Bankrupt Innkeeper (Bells Weekly Messenger).
  • 1869, PO Directory names William Sutton as a beer retailer.
  • Also from 1869, PO Directory Charles Warner was a beer retailer and miller. See Thorney Green Mill.
