Sidney and Joan Scarlett
In 1948 Sidney Ronald Scarlett married Joan Maud Finbow (b. 13/12/1923 – d 1984).
The reception was reported as being held in the Village Hall, but as Stowupland’s Village hall was not built until 1956 was this the parish or Iron Room in the grounds of the Vicarage or the Boys Brigade Hut near Crown farm, or in Mendlesham?
Joan’s parents were from The Street< Mendlesham. The ceremony was conducted by the Rev Arch. The best man was Mr Russell Scarlett and there were 5 bridesmaids: Betsy Scarlett ( Sidney’s sister), Iris, Brenda and Patricia Finbow (sisters of Joan) and Margaret Cooper ( Sidney’s niece).
Joan had been employed fro 6 years at Messrs Wilson’s of Stowmarket. Before working at Wilsons in 1939 she had been a house maid for Agnes Hendy (b. 24/9/1871) at The Grange Little Stonham.
Sidney’s grandparents were George and Julia Scarlett. George had worked at Stowupland Hall, but sadly he had died in 1921.
In the 1950’s Joan and Sidney moved into Saxham Cottage and took over responsibility for Gyford’s shop.
In 1960, Sidney’s father Charles William Scarlett died at the age of 72. He had been employed at Grange Farm for 60 years and apparently was at the farm on the day he died. The funeral service was held at The Stowupland Congregational Church (now the URC). {Suffolk Chronicle: 17 June 1960.}
Joan and Sid were very active in village life, both in the church and social activities. Joanwas a keen flower arranger growing many flowers herself in the garden of Saxham Cottage, apparently Sid was not mucch of a gardener.
