The Scarlett family

Sidney R Scarlett was born in 1920 in Stowupland. He died in 1995. He had married Joan Maud Finbow (b.1923 – d.1984) in 1948 and they had one son. Sidney had been brought up in Grange (Farm) Cottage, Saxham Street next door to the Gyford family In the 1950’s he was living in Saxham Cottage after Mrs Elsie Gyford had remarried and moved to Forward Green. A local resident believed that Chas Gyford had left the Gyford shop to Sidney  in his will but Mrs Gyford continued to live in Saxham Cottage till the early 50s.

Sidney’s parents were Charles William Scarlett (b1887) and Ethel Kate Chaplin (b1888).  Charles was a Farm Stockman. They married at the age of 22 in 1911. This may have been  when they moved into Grange (Farm) Cottage (although they may have first moved to a property nearer the Drift moving into Grange Cottage in 1925) and it is believed Charles became farm manager for Grange Farm

The 1939 war survey names 2 of Sidney;s siblings as Rufus George (b1913) and Russell W (1923), 2 additional siblings are unnamed.  Sidney’s occupation was an outfitter’s assistant, so was he already working for in his neighbour’s shop. Chas Gyford, Elsie’ husband had died in 1936.

We now know Sidney had 3 sisters and 3 brothers.

Olive Maude (1911 -1979)

Rufus George (1913 -1996) – worked for his brother Sidney in Gyford’s shop as a driver. Local chat says he was often accompanied by his wife (this may have been Mary Wilden?)

Wilfred Charles ((1918 -1942) – Wilfred was killed in WW2 when the plane he was in was shot down in the Netherlands.

Sydney Ronald (1920 -1995) – In 1948 he married Joan Finbow and became a partner in Gyford’s, they lived in Saxham Cottage

Russell William (1923 -1991)  in 1939 he was a corn merchants assistant.

Bertha Kathleen (1925 -2003)

Phyllis  (1927 -) married John Lovick in July 1948. They were employed at the Education Department, County Hall, Ipswich.

George Joshua Scarlett (1840 – 1937)

George Joshua Scarlett was Sidney’s grandfather . He was married to Julia Forsdike (1850 – 1913). They were both natives of Tuddenham but by the 1881 census they were living in Stowupland. George lived here  for over 50 years. He worked for Mr H.F. Harwood at Stowupland Hall where in 1887 he planted a tree to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. He was a keen exhibitor at the Stowupland Flower Show and Fete.

George retired in 1921 and died at the age of 88 at his daughter’s home in Ringshall. He is buried in Stowupland, read reports  from his funeral service.

Phyllis Scarlett won a scholarship to Stowmarket grammar school

Rufus George Scarlett (b1913), elder brother of Sidney  was listed in the 1939 register as a Tailors Roundsman (motor), so this was probably for the Gyford’s shop.  At this time his family were living next door to the Gyfords.

He may have married a Mary Wilden.

In 1779 a Robert Scarlett is mentioned as holding land near to Farry’s Close which adjoined land of John Hotot
