Stowupland School children in 1913

Featured below are just some of the children who attended Stowupland School in the first decades of the 20th century. Their headmaster was Mr Arthur Bramhall, who would have lived with his family in the school house.

1907 class of school children

Thought to be a class from 1907 Stowupland school children. The male teacher on the right could be Mr Bramhall.

In 1904, 1909 and 1912 three teachers are named in the Journal of the Royal Horticultural Society as taking the Teachers Examination in Cottage and Allotment Gardening. They were in 1904 A.G. Bramhall, in 1909  J.W. Petley and in 1912 F.H. Barton {thanks to Neil Langridge for retrieving this}.

Many school children were recorded in the local papers as winning prizes at Stowupland Flower show for their school garden or handicrafts.

We assume the following photo was taken a few years prior to the out break of WW1.

Margaret Catchpole is seated to the right of the giel ho;ding the sign. Margaret went onto train as a teacher with the help of Mr Bramhall, seen here standing at the back of the class.

We are grateful to the memories of local people for putting names to the faces of many of the children, unfortunately there are some we have no positive identification for.
