Mishaps, Misdeeds and other Miscellany

Law and Order

Stowupland no longer has its own local bobby or police house. In the early 20th century the police house was in one of the Barn Cottages, it later moved to a house nearly opposite Elm Farm.

In the 20th century we were served by PC. George Salter (1901), PC Culpeck (1935) PC Jack Jermy and PC (William) John Doward.

(Dates refer to years we know the constable was serving in Stowupland).

In the 1930s the parish council discussed the location of the Police House. This had been raised a few times with the ‘proper authorities’ stating that ‘ the police station should be in a more central position, rather than at the lower end of the parish, and the matter would receive attention. So  far nothing more had been heard but Mr Carter hoped that something would be done, as many people, especially farmers, found it very inconvenient when applying for pig licences, etc, to be obliged to go to the far end of the parish to procur them.’

In 1938 PC Coleridge Randle and Inspector Syrett were called out from Stowmarket to investigate the sudden death (suicide) of Chas Gyford at Saxham Cottage. Also in attendance was Dr Hugh Selwyn Gaskell.
