Stowupland and the Media
In 1989, the ladies of the WI wrote to the BBC to invite the Gardeners Question Time Panel to visit the village and give advice on their gardening problems. Sadly it didnt happen and we are still waiting.
In 1969 a Stowupland Parish Council meeting was filmed to form part of a film record on the ‘history and purpose of local government.’ The press report of the meeting stated that to avoid a ‘phony atmosphere’ the filming had not been advertised so only the usual ’10 or so members of the public were present’.
During the meeting the chairman Councillor A.G.Addison reported that he and the vice-chairmen Councillor Jack Carter had recently attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace as representatives of Suffolk Parish Councillors. (15/8/69)
In 1965/6, The Crown Inn was featured in a film about Alan Smethurst, the Singing Postman.
In 1984 Jack and Ena Carter appeared in the BBC series Our House. This was a series of 6 programs featuring a different house each week ‘It is not only stately homes which are infused with family history, memories and traditions. More ordinary dwellings carry their own stories.‘Episode 5 featured the Carters and quoted Jack as saying ”Its the farm you chose not the house‘. Ena had always refused to have a TV in the house but she was persuaded to appear in this program which provides a wonderful snap shot of their life together.
