Our Paupers and the poor.

Paupers’ Graves, adjacent to the Stow Union Workhouse in Onehouse. Ray Taylor’s research allows us to name people who were associated with Stowupland but were laid to rest here between 1815 and 1835. (NB d.o.b are approximations).

On 10/11/1815 Charles Rose (b. 1770) was laid to rest at the age of 46.

On 18/12/1815 Sarah Hearn (b. 1735) was laid to rest at the age of 80.

Mark Hearn (b. 1761) was laid to rest on 03/02/1831 aged 70.

On 25/02/1816 Jeremiah Rozier (b 1815) was laid to rest aged 9 months.

Eliza Rozier was laid to rest aged 1 on 02/12/1821.

On 03/09/1816 William Bayham (b.1799) was laid to rest at the age of 17.

On 10/01/1817 John Nunn was laid to rest, his age is unknown.

On 09/08/1818 a Thomas Tricker (b. 1778) was laid to rest at the age of 40.

On 12/04/1819 Elizabeth Bloomfield (b. 1807) was laid to rest at the age of 12.

On 15/05/1819 Elizabeth Bloomfield (b.1780) at the age of 42 was also laid to rest.

William Bloomfield (b. 1768) was laid to rest at age 66 on 19/01/1823

On 24/05/1819 William Claw (b. 1812) at the age of 7 was laid to rest.

On 07/07/1819 Sarah Ann Baker (b.1890) was laid to rest aged 27.

On 28/01/1820 John Page (b. 1760) was laid to rest aged 66.

On 24/05/1820 James Hammond, an infant was laid to rest.

Sarah Hammond aged 14 was laid to rest on 02/12/1821.

On 03/02/1821 John Pegg aged just over 1 was laid to rest.

Robert Pegg of an unknown age was laid to rest on 23/02/1822.

Mary Pegg (b. 1770) was laid to rest on 10/10/1830 at the age of 60.

Robert Pegg was laid to rest aged just 2 months on 28/10/1830

On 06/01/1824 Charles King ( b. 1800) was laid to rest aged 24.

William King (b.1747) was laid to rest on 11/06/1826 aged 79.

On 06/10/1824 Mary Wright (b. 1744) was laid to rest aged 80.

Lydia Wright (b. 1776) was laid to rest on 11/05/1834 aged 58.

On 01/08/1824 Mary Durrant (b. 1810) was laid to rest at 14 years old.

On 31/10/1824 Jonathan Berry (b 1740) was laid to rest aged 84.

On 15/01/1826 Thomas Dent (b. 1762) was laid to rest at the age of 64.

On 10/10/1827 James Roper was laid to rest, his age is unrecorded.

On 14/06/1832 Francis Drake (b. 1749) was laid to rest aged 85.

Mary Drake (b. 1853) was laid to rest on 23/01/1833 aged 80.

On 16/01/1833 Sarah Pyman (b. 1745) was laid to rest age 88.

On 28/10/1835 John Wink (b.1753) was laid to rest aged 82.

Poor relief?

In the chruchwarden accounts for Stowmarket Church (St Mary & St Peter) an occasional reference is found to money being given to individuals who have not completed any work. Until anything different is found it will be assumed these were people in recipt of some type of poor relief. (See also charities and charitable works)

In 1673 – various payments are made to a Goody Dale; for hir clothes making, for a binding & a pocket 2s, a further 2s for a pair of shoes. Several times to Goody Dale 2s.

      – to old Gooddy Heyward for rent £2 15s.

     – 6d pd to Goody Bird when she was sick.

    – payment illegible but for a passenger wch travelles by the order of Justice of the peace

      – laid out when I (James Harold) took the poore of from paying church (?) money 8d.

There is a supplementary comment ‘for the supp forty shillings for the finding out of the widd Rushbrookes boy is not allowed in this (church wardens?) account’. NL suggests this was payment for an apprenticeship.

In 1703 -£1 14s 6d Borde of Robt Risbrook at 2 shillings & six pence a week for 13 weeks and 5 days. A further 1s and 1d for mending his boots and Sooes.
