Latest Update 26

At the time of writing, mid January 2025, we have woken up one morning to see a slight covering of snow, but in Stowupland our bad weather has been freezing fog, persistent rain causing some areas of flooding but nothing like we experienced this time last year.

The image of Holy Trinity Church shows the snow fall that local farmer Jack Carter recorded in his 1985 diary.

20 years ealier in 1965 Margaret Catchpole recorded in her diary that January 20th was a bitterly cold morning, heavy snow and rain showers till mid day. Of interest, the previous week on Jan 13th she noted ‘call at Crown Farm for apples. Help yourself service. Mr Leaming comes in’. The land on which Stowupland High School now stands was formerly Crown farm land and in the early 20th century contained a large fruit orchard.

This month there is no newsletter as Telstar takes a break over the festive season. Next month’s newsletter will have a review of our November and Decembers meetings, but if you can’t wait you can hear Jerry’s audio report on Dot Marsden’s talk about her time as matron at Stow Lodge by following the link to Jerry Jabbas.

Just to conclude here is a snow covered Saxham Cottage from a few years ago.
