On the back of the original photo donated to SRO by Miss H Freeman  is written ‘Joyce & William Freeman, William’s two sisters (L) & the farm workers (circa 1860? my grandparenst’. Starting from the left are Mary Freeman (b. 1827), then Ellen Freeman (b 1831). First on the right is Joce Feeman (nee Ridley b. 1837), second right is William Freeman (b. 1830).

In its 200 years many local people have found employment on the estate. As we learn more names they will be posted here,

Ipswich Chronicle Jan 1848, Married at Stonham Church Thomas, 2nd son of Mr William Goldsmith, farmer, and Anna, eldest daughter of Mr James Garnham of Upland Hall (ie stowupland Hall)

William and and his son Edmund Robinson worked for Charles Rayner Freeman in the 19th century. William was a horseman whilst his young son ‘acted as an interpreter’ for his deaf employer.

George Joshua Scarlett – was born in Tuddenham but came to work on the estate in the late 19th century for Mr H.F.Harwood

“Rusty”, John Wade – worked with the horses for the carter family at Stowupland Hall and at Gipping Farm

Frederick Chaplin (b 1862 – d 1940). After leaving The Firs, Stowupland, Frederick worked on the Stowupland Hall estate for 20 years.  he was a horseman. In 1937 he was living with his son

John Brame worked for Mr Harwood.
