Read our December 2024 Newsletter as published in Telstar 382 with Jerry’s review of Nicky Reynold’s talk about the WW2 Lumber Jills or listen in to Jerry’s Jabbas.
For our last meeting of 2024, one of our trustees gave us a talk on local pubs. The image above shows the architect’s view of our Retreat as it would look after the rebuild in the 1960s.
Neil has spoken to other groups about pubs in and around Stowmarket but for this session he focused on pubs within Stowupland and some of those along the banks of the river Gipping. He will write a review of his talk in February’s Telstar.
The evening commenced with a short AGM. Sadly one of our longest serving trustees felt the time had come for her to step down, the remaing trustees were all re-elected.
In addition to our talk the committee had organised a couple of fun activities. There was our traditional Treasure Hunt, which takes the form of ‘Pin the Tail on the Donkey’, but participants use a sticker to locate the site where a treasure trove might have been buried in the 1880s. For those unfamiliar with this activity it is interesting to see the layout of Stowupland of 150 years ago.
We also had a some anagrams for members and visitors to solve during Neil’s talk. Can you recognise which pubs are The Tree Rat or the New Torch? A more tricky one was The One Green Berry House.
Wishing all our followers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
