John Diaper (b1810)

From Ipswich Journal, 5th April 1850. George Wilden (22), Abraham Colthorpe (41), John Pegg (33),  Robert Pegg (17),  John Diaper (40),  Charles Last (23), Abraham Furrow (33) were charged with feloniously cutting down trees at Stowupland. As witnesses for the prosecution did not appear the prisoners were discharged.

James Diaper

18th August 1821: James Diaper for stealing a quality of clover stover, the property of Willaim Turner of Stowupland – to be imprisoned three months.

  • Mary b 20th December 1829 – baptised 25th July 1830
  • Sarah b 23th April 1832 – baptised 30th September 1832
  • George Diaper b 17th February 1833 – baptised 18 January 183?

The children were baptised in Stowmarket Independant Meeting House (later Congregationalist/URC) {Details supplied by Neil Langridge}

The tithe apportionements shows properties owned by members of the Diaper family in 1840 along Gipping Road. The cottages are between the road and field 297, butting onto the Long Orchard.

  • 298: James Diaper – owner and occupier of cottages & gardens.
  • 298A: cottage & Gdn owner James Diaper, occupier George Diaper
  • 299: Samuel Diaper – owner and occupier of cottages & gardens.
  • 300: the Long orchard was occupied by James & Samuel Diaper but owned by Earl Stonham (by 1960s it was owned by the Carters of Green Farm)

Abraham Diapers is named as a shopkeeper  Whites 1885, 1891/2 and then as a grocer in Whites 1896 and Kelly’s 1904. The location of the shop is not known for certain, suggestions are on land opposite today’s 37 Columbyne Close (according to Ena Carter owned by Studd in 1970), or behind the village pound.

Abraham’s wife  reportedly’ ran the shop whilst her husband Abram (sic) tended a small holding’.

In 1905 a Sarah Ann Diaper was assualted whilst working in a shop. We don’t know if this was the wife of Abraham or the Aunt Sarah named in photos of Willow Cottage (found in the Catchpole Archive)

In the 1901 census a Sarah Diaper is the wife of agricultural labourer David amd they are living on the Green (on the Green Farm side). They had married in 1898.

David was the brother of Maggie and Dora Diaper, the children of Issac Diaper. Sarah Ann may have been the daughter of Rachel Catchpole and an aunt of Margaret Catchpole.

 

 

If she was an aunt of Margaret Catchpole she was probably the Sarah C.

who appears in 1861 census daughter of Rachael Catchpole widow in Saxham Street.

 

David Diaper married Sarah Anne Catchpole in 1899 – a late marriage.

In 1912, a James Diaper is named as a shop keeper.

In 1906 the Stowmarket Weekly Post reported on a road traffic incident in which Mrs R Diaper (b.1859) of Elm Farm was seriously injured.

Edward Diaper (b about 1860 – d. 1938) was originally from Stowupland, living there for 35 years before moving to Stowmarket following his marriage. He was employed for 50 years as a street lamp lighter by the Stowmarket Gas Co, lighting ang then extinguishing gas street lights. {SLHG Archives/OS/scarpbook}

A press report in February 1886 tells us that diphtheria was ‘prevalent in Stowupland. Issac Diaper, living on the Green, had 4 children affected, 2 of whom died.

1914 Stowupland wedding of Maggie, eldest daughter of an Issac Diaper. She was given away by her brother David. Her sister Dora and her cousin Nora were bridesmaids.

From the 1891 Electoral Roll – Charles Diaper, Jonathan Diaper and Octavius Diaper are all listed as living on Gipping Road.

Charles Diaper (b. 1847 in Combs – d. Jan 1892 in Stowupland ) m Nov 1872 Esther Turner (b. 1855 – d-1925). In 1873 he was working as an agricultural labourer for Mr Robt Boby. They had several children:

Edith Betsy Diaper b. 1873 died aged 9 weeks. An inquest into her death was held at the Retreat, a Stowmarket surgeon Mr Sheridan gave evidence that ‘in his opinion death was by suffocation, the jury returned a verdict of “accidental death.”

Mary Ann

b April 1875 in Stowupland, she married a Denny by 1901 and died in December 1929, aged 54.

William

born 1877. in 1921 he was working for Mr H Potter at Columbyne Hall  as a horseman

Charles Richard

He was born 1878/9 and baptised at Holy Trinity on 15th Sept 1878. In 1891 at age 14 he was an agricultural labourer , by 1901, a horseman on a  farm but by 1911 he was a labourer at the Gun Cotton Factory, also recorded in the census as head of the household.By 1939, age 60  he was a maltster

Ellen Emma

She was born in Stowupland in 1879/80. She died in Ipswich in 1928, aged 48.

Albert Roland (b 1892 -d 1963)

In 1901 he is living in Stowupland and in the 1911 census – Esther (nee Turner) Diaper is living with her son Albert (b1892), in Gipping Road (Back Road), in Rose Cottage.  She was a widow (she dies in 1925, her husband having died in 1892?).

Private Albert Roland DIAPER 242222- Yorkshire Regiment. He also served with Employment Company, 431st Agricultural Company, Labour Corps.(679702) He served in the Forces from 15th February 1916 till 7th August 1919 when he was discharged with SWB No.275252. (Sickness)

??? Esther’s husband’s death is given as 1892 but she has 3 more children???

born 1898, died 1966 in Ipswich. In 1921 he was livin in Stowupland and working for Mr H. Potter at Columbine Hall. (?? Is this the same Geoge Diaper of Oak Farm. Thorney Green??)

In 1904 Kellys,  Mrs Rachel Diaper is named as the farmer.

By 1904 Howard Diaper is owner and occupier of Elm Farm.  In May, 1936 Mr & Mrs Diaper died. Mrs Elizabeth A Diaper  was the daughter of George Burt

Elizabeth and Howard Diaper. Elizabeth died at Eastwood at the age of 78. She had served on the Stowupland Flower show and fete committee. By 1904 Howard Diaper was owner and occupier of Elm Farm. In 1936 there was a press report of the funeral of Mr Howard Diaper.

In May, 1936 Mr H & Mrs Diaper died. Howard was 78. Mrs Elizabeth A Diaper was the daughter of George Burt (see photos in farmhouses and Farms)

1938, Death of Octavius Diaper

Death of Octavius Diaper in 1938. Although his family had business in Stowmarket, Octavius  had lived on Thorney Green and was a chorister at Stowupland parish church during the time of Rev Shallard.

From the 1891 Electoral Roll an Octavius Draper was living on Gipping Road.

1939 Eva E.Diaper, daughter of Mr & Mrs Charles Diaper of Stowupland Green married Cecil B. Keeble of Trimley St Martin.

In the 1930s Miss I. Diaper married F. Thrower from Trimley. {Cutting found in Catchpole’s scrapbooks in the SLHG Archives}

From the 1939 survey Samuel Diaper (b.14/2/1865) and Harriett S Diaper ( b. 07/01/1867) are living in Gipping Road next door to Spencer (b.08/03/1872) and Sarah Wilden (b. 17/05/1868). Samuel is a retired sewage worker, Spencer is a general labourer. Harriett is described as a housewife, whilst Sarah as doing unpaid domestic duties.

Ena Carter noted that Prent Diaper worked at Green Farm.
