Geoffrey Goddard (15th century)

In the 1487 will of John Kebyll of Stowmarket there is mention of a shop ‘formerly John Fenkel’s afterwards Geoffrey Goddard’.

Thos Goddard (19th century)

In the 19th century Thos Goddard is named as having land in Hatchcroft, Saxham Street.

In 1892 Mr H.F.Harwood inreased the Stowupland Hall estate with land that had previously been owned by Thomas Goddard.

 i.e. 8 3/4 acres of land to Stowupland Hall,  previously of John Claxton & formerly in the tenure of Thomas Goddard.

2 acres lying between Spoonman or probably Sparrows and Tuns

3 acres in a close called Tuns (Thorney)

3 roods in Colleys croft

1 acre and 1 rood abutting Broad Green

1 acre 3 roods of the tenement Thrandston in Sparshawk Croft.

1891 – occupation of Spoonman’s Farm – James Goddard -Elector’s list {ECA)

In 1893 a reference to a meadow called Sudneys, late of John Goddard, abutting the meadow belonging to the inhabitants of Stowupland. This may be Stowupland Town Meadow (337) but more likely a meadow belonging to Stowupland Town farm (90 etc).

1871 George Goddard from Stowupand Street was a painter and town crier.

From 1673 Church warden accounts for Stowupland.

Recd of Tho Goddard the tenant for the Towne lands at severall times – £30-00-00. (though which Towne lands are not specified)

1568 – beginning at the Dayre gate of the manor house [Columbine] unto the Dayre house…unto a tenement in which one Edmond Randall dewelte & now Abraham Goddard, in lengthe towards the northe, unto a tenement of Robt Goddard the elder wherein Willm Goddard nowe dwelleth

Thomas Goddard . “from Bentall Feild corner next to the ???Crosse unto the peyghtell of Thomas Goddard on the northe side of the highway” [nr Stowmarket].

Also Bartholomew Goddard dwelleth somwhere bewteen Sheepecote  and Thorney Green.

1639, April 16th.  ‘Miles Goddard for the wholl yeares rent of the Towne lands ended at Michellmas last’ {Neil Langridge: Stowupland Church Warden accounts, copied 5/11/24}                                        

1650, April 23rd, ‘Layed out att Mr Godards att the time of going the bounns £1 -7 -0. NL comments that” Going the Bounds was a procession around the parish boundary traditionally held on Ascension Day Mr Goddard I believe kept a shop in Stowmarket so for provisions for the day”.  {Neil Langridge: Stowupland Church Warden accounts,copied 5/11/24}
