Comrades of The 37
I have chosen to use the soldier silhouette not just to denote the fallen but for all those who we know served in an armed service.
Here will be added those men listed in the 1917 Stowupland Roll of Honour who we assume returned to Stowupland. Some we have very little information about but for those we know more about there will be a link to the relevant pages. Some of their families lived in the area we know today as Stowupland, but some lived in roads that are now part of Stowmarket.
Since Stowupland had a relatively small population most of the families would have known each other and been related. An* before the name was used to show who was serving abroad in 1917.
Whilst some the death of some of the soldiers is recorded in the the 1917 Rills of Honour, other sadly died in the following year, see The 37 for those commemorated on Stowupland War Memorial.
Prvt Chas Abbott. of the Civil Service Rifles (Prince of Wales Own).
Aldous, Gunner W. S., R.G.A
*Allard, Prvt J,. 25th London Regt. This maybe John Allard a baker, who by the out break of WW1 was living at The Downs, Stowupland. By 1917 he had been discharged.
Berry Rifleman A.S., Rifle Brigade. In 1917 he was a Prisoner of War.
*Berry Prvt Harry, Suffolk Regt. In 1917 he had been discharged.
*Beaumont, Prvt Harry (b. 1884), Suffolk Regt
*Beaumont, prvt Wm, (b 1897) Suffolk Regt. He is a machine gunner.
There are 5 Brame soldiers named on the 1917 Stowupland Roll of Honour. Private Harry Brame of the Suffolk Regiment was killed in Iraq in 1915. Spencer and Arthur had been discharged by mid 1917, but *John and *Ernest were serving abroad.
*Lt Corpl S, Bramhall – in the Canadian Motor Transport.
There are 4 Burch soldiers named, *Bert and *John were serving abroad, Oliver had been wounded and Robt discharged.
Oliver Chapman is named on the 1917 Stowupland Roll of Honour. Nothing more is known
*Prvt Samuel Cobbold is named in the Stowupland Roll of Honour, he is discharged.
Eric Daniels , R.F.C. Probably in 1914 his family were in Stowmarket but was an organist at Stowupland church.
*Prvt Harry Dent was named as in the Machine Gun Corps in the 1917 Stowupland Roll of Honour. He was discharged.
Private Albert Roland DIAPER 242222- Yorkshire Regiment. He also served with Employment Company, 431st Agricultural Company, Labour Corps.(679702) He served in the Forces from 15th February 1916 till 7th August 1919 when he was discharged with SWB No.275252. (Sickness)
There are 3 Edwards, who maybe family members. Prvt Frederick of the 8th Suffolk was wounded, Prvt George and Sergt John Harold.
There are 4 Forsdicks and 2 Forsdikes. Cyril, George, *Harry (Prvt Machine Gun Corp) and Prvt Godfrey of the A.S.C who was wounded. The 2 Forsdikes named were Sergt George and Prvt Frederick both of the Suffolk Regt. Prvt Frederick was reported wounded in 1917.
F.W. Finbow was a cyclist in the 6th Suffolks.
George S. Firman
*Prvt Chas Garnham of the Suffolk Regiment. A John Robert Garnham had died in 1915 and is listed on the War memorial.

2 Gyford brothers are listed. *Chas Gyford, R.F.C., 2nd A.M. and *Corpl. William Gyford a despatch rider for R.E.
4Hammonds are named, they were all brothers: Prvt Alfred (Jack) with the Durham Light Infantry died in 1916, Prvts *Osmond and *Willie were with the A.S.C, and *Prvt Sidney with the Suffolk Regt. Sidney George was to die in August 1917.
2 Hitchcocks: 2nd Lient L.H. 6th Suffolks and *Bombr. R.F Anti- aircraft section Canadians.
Horn, Fredk. Thos.
5 Horrex’s are named. *Prvt Robt Horrex in the Suffolks and *Gunner William A of the R.H.A.
Prvt Jas. W of the K.O.R.I was killed later. but Gunner John Horrex of the R.F.A was already listed as dead, in the 1917 Roll of Honour John’s brother Bertie was listed as missing but later confirmed dead in 1916
There are 3 Kerry‘s named: *Prvt Fredk (Suffolk Regt), *Farrier-Sargt Rufus A.S.C. and Samuel (Suffolk Regt). Samuel was killed in April 1917.
There are 3 Lever’s, all brothers living in Victoria Road in 1911 with parents Thomas and Amelia. *Bombr Harold in the R.F.A had been a nursery gardener, *Prvt Alexander pf the Queens W Surrey Regt had been an apprentice carpenter and *Prvt Cyril of the 6th York Regt had been a miller.
In 1911 they had 3 younger brothers all at school.
Prvt John Levitt of the 5th Suffolks whose family had lived on the Green had died in 1915,
Prvt George Lusher of 8th Suffolk who lived on Gipping Road with his wife and 3 year old child had died at the end of 1916.
2 Millers are named. Prvt George of the Suffolk Regt is reported killed, but his death possibly didnt happen till 1918.
There are 4 Markham Brothers named, the family lived in Stowupland Road which is now in Stowmarket. *Isaac (b. 1893) joined up in February 1915, in the Kings Own Rifles. Robert (1891) was a Gunner in the R.G.A, he had joined up in September 1916. Bertie joined up in February 1916 in the Royal West Surrey Regiment. The youngest son Herbert (b. 1899)went into the Navy as an Able Seaman, enlisting in April 1917. All of the boys had been in the Stowmarket Boys Brigade.
Although not included in the Stowupland Roll of Honour, the family also had a son-in-law Lance Corp G. Smith who was married to their daughter Selina (b.1890). He had joined up in October 1916.
There are 2 Nunn’s but insure if they are related. *Driver William Nunn of the A.S.C and *Corpl Joseph Nunn of the R.F.A. Joseph was in the Norfolk Regt by the end of 1917 he had been killed. His name is not included on the Stowupland War Memorial.
*Corpl J. Oliver of the 3rd East Lancs Regt.
3 Peart s are named: *Sapper Harold Peart of the R.E., A.B. Roland Peart of the R.N., and *Prvt Wilfred Peart of the 4th SUffolks. By mid 1917 Roland had been discharged.
La Corpl William Ramply of the 5th Suffolks had been wounded.
Prvt Reginald Russell of the Machine Gun Corp.
There are 3 Robinson’s named: Albert, Aubrey and *Prvt George A.S.C. Aubrey had been killed in April 1917, his family had lived in Saxham Street.
There are 3 Reddish named. *Sapper William Edward of the R.E., Bertie of the 6th Suffolks and *Roland of the 11th Suffolks.
Prvt E. Craske Rush of the 2nd Suffolks was reported Killed in Action. An Alfred Craske Rush is named on the memorial, he had been killed on the Somme in 1915.
*Prvt H.W. Salmon of the 5th Suffolks.
Sheldrake
*Prvt Fredk Stannard of the 5th Suffolk. Brothers Albert and Herbert are both named on the Stowupland War Memorial.
*Sergt Raymond L. Stearn, Machine Gun Corps.
There are 3 Stebbings: *Signalman George. R.G.A., Prvt Chas Stebbings and Prvt Walter Stebbings, Sussex Regt.
In 1917 Chas Stebbings had been wounded, Walter had died in April 1917.
There are 3 Steggall‘s: Gunner Chas. R.F.A., *Prvt W. Steggall 4th Suffolks, Rifleman L.G. Steggall of the Rifle brigade was wounded.
Alfred George Steggall (b. 1896 Stowmarket).- Rifleman S/8926. 12 Rifle Brigade is not named on the Stowupland Roll of Honour but he was killed in 1918 at the age of 22.
There are 3 Suttle‘s: Wlliam, Joseph and 2nd Lieut Nelson F. Suttle. In the June Roll of Honour he was reported as wounded, he had been severely wounded in 1916 and no longer fit for active service, he was buried in Cambridge, he died in 1918.
There are 3 Simpson‘s named: G.H., Albert and Alec.
H.W. Tredghill, Troopship Wireless Operator
Edward C. Trudgill (b. 1898 Stowupland.)- Private 58923. 1st Garrison Battalion Prince of Wales Own West Riding Regiment, is not named on the 1917 Roll of Honour though his parents lived in Creeting Road, he is named on the Stowupland memorial having died on the 18th march 1919, age 20.

There are 5 Tricker‘s named: Electrician W.A. Tricker in the R.N., A.W. Engineer Artificer Tricker of the R.N. , *Sergt Harry Tricker 5th Suffolks, Sergt Ernest Tricker 6th Suffolks and *Corpl Stanley Tricker 5th Suffolks.
14 Wilden‘s: were named: *Prvt Albert G of the 13th Gloucesters, La Corpl David of the Rifle Brigade, *Prvt Frank of the North Hants Regt, *Corpl Henry G of the 5th Suffolks, Cyclist J.W Wilden of the 6th Suffolks, Gunner F Wilden of the R.F.A., Sergt J. \wilden of the Rifle Brigade, Prvt Spencer of the Labour Battalion, Prvt Robert P of the Royal West Kents, Gunner Chas E. Wilden R.F.A., *Prvt Jubal F. Wilden 13th Essex Regt, *Prvt R.D. Wilden Rifle Brigade (att. Bedfords) and Edward Wilden.
Also 4 Wildings: *Prvt George of the 8th Suffolks, *Prvt Samuel of the 12th Suffolks, *Prvt Walter of the 1st Bedfordshire Regt, and Prvt T.A. of the 6th Leinster Regt.
Albert, David and Robert were all reported as being wounded. Frank Wilden (b.1892 Stowupland)- Gunner 59475. 2nd Battalion Royal Northampton Regiment was to die on 25th March 1918, age 33.
Also Frank’s cousin Frederick Wilden (b. 1892 Stowupland) – Gunner 59475. 157th Heavy Royal Garrison Artillery was to die on 20th July 1918, age 26.
Alfred Witton W., R.G.A.
*La Corpl John Charles Woods (b. 1887 Stowupland) of the 11th Royal Sussex Regt. He died on 25th April 1918, age 31.
