The 37 Commemorated on WW1 Plaque
SLHG is grateful to the students of Stowupland High School for their initial research with the help of Mike Jessop.
Much of the background information has been obtained from census details and some from relatives who still live in Stowupland. It has to be remembered that since WW1 the boundary between Stowupland and Stowmarket has changed so searching for the location of their family home may place it in Stowmarket. For details of those who died in WW2 see the 10.
George H. Abbott, Corporal 15298 11th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.
b. 1896 Stowupland –
d. Flanders 7th June 1917. Age 21.
Killed in action – buried Grave VB Baileul Road cemetery, Pas de Calais.
In 1911 at age 15 he was living in Victoria Road and employed at the Printing Works.
He had a sister Miss M.C.Abbott of Laurel Cottages, Victoria Road.
Ephraim Baker, Private 9/43687 17th Battalion Middlesex Regiment.
b. 1896 Mendelsham, d. Somme 13th November 1916, Age 20.
He was killed in action and is commemorated Pier and Face 12D and 13A Thieval Memorial Somme.
His parents are Edgar and Betsy Baker, in the 1901 census he had 3 brothers and 4 sisters.
In 1911 at age 15 he is working on his parent’s farm, Bakers farm in Saxham Street.
Charles Henry Barnard, Private 1241 5th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.
b 1895 in Stowupland – d.12th August 1915. Age 20
He was killed in action at Gallipoli and is commemorated on Panel 46 and 47 Helles Memorial, Turkey.
In 1911 aged 16 he was living on the Green and employed as a sawyer’s assistant.
His parents are Arthur and Anna Barnard living at 9 Council Houses, Stowupland.
Harry Brame, Gunner 3425 Royal Garrison Artillery 104th Heavy Brigade
b. 1894 in Stowupland
d. 21st December 1915. Age 21
He died of wounds in Iraq and is buried in Kut War Cemetery, Iraq.
In 1901 he was living in Main Road, he was the eldest son of Frederick and Emily (ne Cobbold) Brame. His grandfather was Frederick Brame (b.1874) from Saxham Street.
Leonard Burch, Private 47225 1st Inniskilling Fusiliers.
b. 1892 Hitcham
d 15th October, 1918. Aged 26
He died of his wounds and is buried in Grave 1VG11 Dunhallow Cemetery, Belgium.
In 1901 he was living on Main Road, the second child of William and Mary Burch.
William Arthur Buxton, Sergeant 12187 12th Battalion Suffolk Regiment.

d. 25th March,1918. Age 30
He was killed in action in France and commemorated on Panel Bay 4 Arras Memorial. His father was George Buxton from Onehouse.
William was married to Emily (later she remarried to a Nunn) of Columbyne Road, Stowupland.
Herbert John Curtis, Rifleman 392972 1st/9th Battalion London Regiment Queen Victoria’s Rifles.

d. 25th April 1918.
Killed in action in France, commemorated on panel 87 and 88 Pozieres Memorial, Somme.
Harry William Cutting, Private 25132 4th Battalion Grenadier Cuards.
b.1893 in Stowupland
d. 21st february, 1918. Age 25.
He was killed in France and buried in Grave VA5 Roclincourt cemetery, Pas de Calais.
1901 at age 8 he is the eldest son of Harry and Ellen Cutting and living in Saxham Street. he has an older sister and younger sister.
In 1911 at age 18 he is still living in Saxham Street and working as a farm labourer. His family and the Gyford‘s family were neighbours.
William Walter Denny, Lance Corporal 26607 15th Battalion Hampshire Regiment.
b. 1893
d. 25th March 1918. Age 25.
In 1918 he was awarded The Military Medal.
Killed in action in France, his death is commemorated on Arras Memorial, Panel Bay 6.
In 1911 aged 18 he was living in Stowupland Road and working as a Builder’s Clerk. His parents were Walter Wallace and Sarah Denny. His father worked on the railway.
There seems some discrepancy as to the date of his death as the War Office weekly casualty list for 14 May 1918 lists ‘Hampshire Regt. Denny 26607, L-Cpl. W. W. (Stowupland)’.
Robert Stanley Double , Private 20372 15th Battalion Suffolk Regiment.
b. 1892 Stowmarket
d. 13th August 1918, aged 36.
He was killed in action in France and buried in Grave 1VB 19 St Venant Robecq Cemetery, Pas de Calais. His parents were Henry and Mary Double of Stowmarket. He was married to Elizabeth Bertha double of Victoria Road.
Albert R. W. Easter, Private 43354 2nd Battalion Suffolk Regiment.
b. 1896 Stowmarket
d. 16th August 1916. Age 20.
He died of wounds in France and is buried in grave X111.1.4 Guillemont Cemetery, Somme.
In 1901, age 5, he was living in The Downs and is the eldest son of Robert and Emma Easter.
By 1911 he is living in Victoria Road and employed as a shoe maker, later being employed as a builder’s labourer.
Harry Robert Francis, Private 7508 1st battalion Suffolk Regiment.
b. Stowmarket, date unknown
d. 24th April 1915
He was killed at Ypres and is commemorated on panel 21 of the Menin Gate.
John Robert Garnham, Private 3/8873 3rd Battalion Dorsetshire Regiment.
b. 1894 in Earl Soham
d. 29th December 1915. Age 21.
He served at home, his place of death is given as Weymouth, Dorset. He is buried in Stowupland Cemetery.
He was the eldest son of William and Amelia Susan (ne Rawlings) Garnham, they moved around a bit. From Earl Soham they moved to Cretingham where his brothers William Albert, Stanley George and a sister Nellie Mabel were born. Then in 1901 they were in Kenton and a further 3 sisters and a brother were born. 1914 found the family in Plomesgate where another sister was born. 3 years after John’s death Stanley Geoge died at the age of 10, but the rest of his brothers and sisters lived to over 50.

Spencer Raymond Gooch, Private TR/13/63825 Kings Rifle Corps, 53rd Training Reserve Battalion.
b 1900 Leeds, Yorkshire
d. 14th October 1918. Age 18.
He served at home and died in the VAD Hospital, Northampton but is buried in Stowmarket Cemetery.
His father, also Spencer Gooch, lived in Eriswell Terrace, Stowupland having moved to Stowupland by the time his son was 10. His mother had died a few months after his birth in Leeds.
Bertie A Grimwood, Private 12395, 2nd Battalion Duke of Wellington’s West Riding regiment.
b. 1893 Stowmarket
d. 5th May 1915. Age 22
He died of wounds and is commemorated on Panel 20 of the Menin Gate.
In 1901 at age 8 he was living in Newton Road, the 4th son of Mr & Mrs John Grimwood (they later moved to Creeting Road.
In 1911 at the age of 18, Bertie was living in Gipping Terrace, Newton Road and working as a labourer.
Alfred (aka Jack) Hammond, originally enlisting in Stowmarket as Private 27941 in the Suffolk Regiment before transferring as Private 42800 12th Durhan Light Infantry.
b.1895 in towupland
d. 7th October 1916, age 21.
He served in france and Flanders before being killed in action on the Somme, he is commemorated on the Thieval Memorial Pier and Face 14A & 14C.
In 1911 at age 16 he was living in Victoria Road and working as a Hawker’s assistant. (a van carrier for Mr Hopgood and employed by the Stowmarket Cooperative Society.)
At the time of his death he had 3 brothers in the army. His elder brother Sidney died the following year, see below. Read exerts from his letter home
Sidney George Hammond, originally enlisted as 4538 in the Suffolk Regiment in Stowmarket before transferring as Private 41054 12th Battalion Suffolk Regiment.
b. 1890 Coddenham
d. 12th August, 1917, age 27
He died of wounds and is buried in Rocquiquy Equancourt Cemetery, Somme.
In 1911 at age 21 he was living in Victoria Road working as a hawker. See above for his brother Alfred who had died a year earlier.
William J. Heading, Private 9H/19715 Royal Marine Light Infantry.
b. 1896 Tottenham
d. 19th July 1917, age 21.
He served on H.M.S Vanguard and his death was recorded as drowned at sea, he is commemorated on panel 25 on the Chatham Naval Memorial. The H.M.S Vanguard sank in Scapa Flow on July 9th, 1917 following an explosion. 800 lives were lost.
His parents was from Tottenham but his grandmother was Mrs Charlotte Denny of Mill Street, Stowupland.
Bertie Horrex, Private 29267 2nd Battalion Suffolk Regiment.
b. 1890 Stowupland.
d. 13th November, 1916. age 26
Buried in Grave 111.T.3 Euston Road Cemetery, Somme.
In 1901 he was living in Barn Cottages, Main Road. His parents were William and Alice Horrex
By 1911 at age 20 he was lodging at Century Cottage, The Green and employed as a farm worker.
His elder brother John died just 5 months before Bertie, see below.
John William Horrex, Gunner 69136 69th Battery 31st Brigade Royal field artillery.
b. 1884 Stowupland.
d. 30th July, 1916 age, 32.
Buried in Grave 291 Salonika Lambert Road Cemetery, Greece.
In 1901 at age 16 as the eldest son of William & Alice Horrex he is living at home in Barn Cottages, Main Road and working on a farm as a cattleman.
by 1911 at age 27 he is married with a 3 year old child, still working on a farm but moved to Gipping Road.
Within 6 months his parents had lost 2 sons (see Bertie Horrex).
Samuel Thomas Kerry – Private 3/9770. 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.
b. 1881 Stowupland
d. 11th April 1917 age 35.
He was killed in action and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial panel bay 4.
In the 1901 and 1911 census he is listed as a single man living in Crown Cottages on Main Road.
He had served in the Boer War before enlisting as a Regular in the 2nd battalion Suffolk Regiment in 1912. He went on to serve in Egypt in 1913. Then from August 1914 until his death he was in Flanders.
John William Levett, Private 1640 5th Battalion Suffolk Regiment.
b. 1894 Stowupland.
d. 13th October 1915, age 21.
He died of wounds in Gallipoli and is commemorated on Helles Memorial in Turkey, Panels 46 & 47.
He was the eldest child of George and Alice Levett who in 1901 and 1911 lived on the Green . At age 16 John was employed as a stockman.
George T. Lusher, Private 40391 2nd battalion Lincolnshire Regiment.
b. 1880 Hitcham
d. 15th November 1916 age 36
He died on the Somme and is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 1C
His parents were William and Joanna Lusher.
In 1911 at age 30 George was living with hsi wife Ellen Emma and 3 year old child in Gipping Road. he is working as a farm labourer.
Alfred William Manning, private 000830 27th Battalion canadian Infantry.
b. 1890 Stowmarket
d. 27th April 1918 age 28
Alfred was killed in action and is buried in grave 11.G.1 Bellacourt Cemetery Pas de Calais.
His parents were Alfred and Mary Manning from Stowmarket and he was married to Jeanne G Manning who later moved to Plymouth.
George N. Miller, Private 22329 12th Battalion Suffolk Regiment.
b. 1898 Stowupland
d. 26th june 1918, age 20
George died in Flanders and is buried in grave Allied 3.118 Cronenbourg cemetery, France.
His parents are John and Anna Miller and in 1901 they are living in Stowupland Road. In 1911 at age 13, George is working as a Hardware errand Boy, living in Oak Cottage, Stowupland Road.
Aubrey Alfred Robinson – Private 22819. 2nd Battalion Suffolk Regiment.
b. 1896 Tuddenham.
d. 11 April 1917, age 21.
He was killed in action and commemorated on the Arras Memorial Panel, Bay 4, Pas de Calais.
His parents were Amos and Ellen Robinson and in 1911 the family are living in Saxham Street, neighbours of the Gyford family. Aubrey was just a year older than Chas’ younger sister. Aubrey at age 15 is working as a Telegraph messenger.
Alfred Craske Rush – Private 26879. 2nd Battalion Suffolk Regiment.
b. 1891 Stowmarker.
d. 19th November 1916, age 25.
Died of wounds on the Somme, buried grave 1V.B.10 Warlincourt Halte cemetery, Sauty,France.
Parents Edgar Craske and marion Rush of Victoria House, newton Road.
Albert William Stannard – Corporal 242560. 5th Battalion Suffolk Regiment. At the time of his death he was an acting sergeant.
b. 1894 Thwaite ST George.
d. 19th April, 1917 – age 23.
Killed in action in Palestine, buried in grave V111.E10 Gaza War Cemetery, Palestine.
His parents were Charles and Mary Stannard and he has a younger brother Herbert (see below), in 1901 and 1911 they are living in Saxham Street. The Stannard’s were neighbours of the Gyford family and in 1933 Mrs Stannard attended Mathilda Gyford’s funeral.
At age 17 Albert is employed as a farm worker.
Herbert was killed in action in France and is buried in grave D5 Ayelle Cemetery, France.
In 1911 at age 14 he was working as a farm worker and living in Saxham Street with his parents Charles and Mary and his elder brother Albert. Albert is the first to die followed a year later by Herbert.
Walter Henry Stebbings – Private G/18161. 7th Sussex regiment.
b. 1896 in Stowupland.
d. 9th April 1917, age 21.
Killed in action and buried in grave P6 Gourock Trench Cemetery, Tolley Les Mofflaines, France.
His father was Thomas Stebbings and he had 2 older siblings. in 1911 at age 15 he was living on The Green working as labourer.
Alfred George Steggall – Rifleman S/8926. 12 Rifle Brigade.
b. 1896 Stowmarket.
d. 30th March 1918, age 22.
Killed in action and commemorated on panel 81 to 84 of Pozieres Memorial, Somme.
He was the youngest son of jethro and Ellen Steggall of Victoria Road.
In 1911 at age 14 he was employed as an errand boy but later worked as a farm labourer.
Nelson Ernest Suttle – Lieutenant, 4th Battalion Suffolk Regiment.
b.1898 Stowmarket
d. 4th November 1918, age 21.
He was severally wounded in 1916 and no longer capable of active service. He was buried in Cambridge cemetery(Histon Road).
His parents were Thomas and Mary Suttle from Newton Road.
In 1911 at age 13 he was employed as a clothier’s assistant, later being employed by the solicitors Banks Aston & Co.
Edward C. Trudgill – Private 58923. 1st Garrison Battalion Prince of Wales Own West Riding Regiment.
b. 1898 Stowupland.
d. 18th march 1919, age 20.
He served im Malta and is buried in grave BXX6 Pieta Cemetery, Malta.
He was the 6th child of William and Kate Trudgil., In 1911 at age 13 he is living with his family at Oak Cottage, Creeting Road.
Cyril Norman Wade – Private 48214. 11th Royal Fusiliers, City of London Regiment.
b.1898 Old Newton
d. 10th August 1917, age 19
He was killed in action at Passchendaele and is buried in grave LX1.F.11 Tyne Cot cemetery, Belgium.
In 1911 he was working on his parents, farm, Pasture Farm, Gipping Road. His Uncle John, ‘Rusty’ claimed to have seen his death in a dream.
Frank Wilden – Gunner 59475. 2nd Battalion Royal Northampton Regiment.
b.1892 Stowupland
d. 25th March 1918, age 33.
Entitled to Victory Medal/British War Medal
Killed in action, commemorated on Panel 54-56 Pozieres memorial, Somme.
In 1911 at age 26 he was living in Saxham Street with his wife and 2 children, he was working as a farm labourer. his father was Robert Wilden.
Frederick Wilden – Gunner 59475. 157th Heavy Royal Garrison Artillery.
b. 1892 Stowupland
d. 20th July 1918, age 26.
He died in Cherbourg Hospital from meningitis and is buried in grave A19 Tourlaville Cemetery, Cherbourg. he was mentioned in despatches on August 15th 1917,
His parents were Frederick and Eliza Wilden and in 1901 they were living in Ivy Cottage, Gipping Road, he was cousin to Frank Wilden.
By 1911 at age 19 he is still living in Gipping Road but employed as a Chemical worker.
John Charles Woods – lance Corporal SD/755. 11th Royal Sussex regiment.
b. 1887 Stowupland
d. 25th April 1918, age 31.
He was killed in action and buried in grave 1.0.28 Branhoek Cemetery, Belgium.
In 1901 at age 14 he was living with his parents Charles and Eliza Woods in The Downs.
